A new edition of the ‘Municipal School Hiking Program’ has started in Estepona, targeting students aged 7 to 18 from local schools. Approximately 3,500 schoolchildren will participate in this initiative, which aims to promote nature conservation and hiking as a healthy activity in the natural environment. The program also focuses on educating students about Estepona’s natural heritage, fostering environmental awareness, and valuing the protection of the environment’s natural, scenic, cultural, and historical assets. Teachers and students actively participate in choosing and preparing routes, with 6 different routes tailored to different age groups and physical abilities. Guided by municipal technicians and teachers, the outings include activities such as interpreting the natural environment, observing flora and fauna, and engaging in environmental games to enhance learning and environmental respect. Recognized by the Spanish Youth Institute (INJUVE) as a model program, this initiative sets an example for similar projects nationwide.
