The joint effort aims to address loneliness among the elderly through a program that involves training and accompanying volunteers. Estepona’s City Council has announced a partnership with the Cudeca Foundation to introduce a social volunteering initiative focused on providing assistance to elderly individuals experiencing unwanted loneliness. This project is a response to the pressing social issue of population aging and the growing disconnection many seniors face from their families, communities, and surroundings. The councilman overseeing Elderly affairs, Daniel García, emphasized that ‘unwanted loneliness is a significant public health concern that directly impacts the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of the elderly. Despite its severity, it often goes unnoticed, affecting numerous seniors in their daily lives.’ To address this challenge effectively, the City Council has collaborated with the Cudeca Foundation to implement targeted solutions. The mayor highlighted the pivotal role of volunteering in the community and underscored that this partnership aims to equip volunteers with the necessary skills to provide active and compassionate support to those in need. The focus is not only on companionship but also on establishing a meaningful connection that restores the voices, histories, and sense of belonging of these individuals within the community. García stressed that ‘this agreement with Cudeca represents a crucial step in the holistic care of our elderly population. We cannot allow anyone to feel isolated or unsupported as they age. Through volunteering, we strengthen the community fabric and recognize the significance of providing sensitive and respectful companionship.’ She urged the public to engage in the program, stating that ‘anyone with a little time and a strong desire to help can truly make a difference in someone else’s life.’ Speaking on the volunteer training program, Eva Víbora Martín from Cudeca’s volunteer and research department explained that the curriculum will cover practical and emotional aspects of support, including effective communication, designing meaningful activities, handling challenging situations, and understanding available resources, all within an ethical framework and a commitment to human dignity. Inmaculada Ruiz, head of Cudeca’s volunteer program, highlighted the increasing need for such initiatives due to evolving family structures in society, emphasizing the importance of building a robust volunteer network to assist those in need. Furthermore, Social Welfare mayor Maria Aguilar announced the availability of 30 spots for volunteer training, encouraging both organizations and individuals to enroll by reaching out to voluntarios@estepona.es. Through this collaboration, Estepona’s City Council and Cudeca reaffirm their dedication to fostering a fair, compassionate, and supportive society where no one faces old age in isolation. It also serves as a call to action for citizens to join as volunteers and actively contribute to positive change.
