Archaeologists and anthropologists are currently studying the recent findings of 12 new tombs discovered in one of the Muslim necropolis in Estepona dating back to the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. These tombs were unearthed during the excavation works of the boulevard in the avenues San Lorenzo and Spain. The Estepona City Council informed the Junta de Andalucía about the need for archaeological supervision due to the known existence of this necropolis, which is considered an archaeological area. The remains of 12 individuals buried following Islamic traditions have been found, adding to the 600 others discovered in previous excavations. The archaeological works will continue to uncover more insights into the past, including the causes of death, ages, and diseases of the deceased. Additionally, medieval weapons and ceramic remains from the same period have been found in the area, shedding light on Estepona’s rich history.
