Scheduled for this Saturday, May 10, the event will kick off at 06.00 am from the Paseo Marítimo (Malva Beach beach bar). All proceeds will be dedicated to supporting individuals at risk of suicide and their families. The councilman from the Sport delegation, Luis Gil, along with the representative of ‘Pieta House’ Foundation, Michael Ohalloran, and the president of AFESOL, Cristian Gonzalez, unveiled the charity walk ‘From the Shadows to the Light’, taking place in Estepona and various locations worldwide on Saturday, May 10. Citizens are urged to participate in this charitable event, which raises funds annually for suicide awareness and prevention programs, as well as for assisting individuals affected by the loss of a loved one to suicide. President of AFESOL, Cristian Gonzalez, expressed gratitude to the City Council for their support and emphasized the symbolic 5-kilometer walk from Malva Beach to Mirador del Carmen. The walk will commence at 06.00 am in darkness and culminate in daylight, symbolizing the journey from darkness to light for those at risk of suicide. Michael Ohalloran highlighted the origins of ‘From the Shadows to the Light’ in Dublin 16 years ago under the patronage of ‘Pieta House’ Foundation, with over 160,000 participants globally by 2024. Stressing the importance of ongoing support for this cause, Ohalloran referenced 2023 data from the National Institute of Statistics, identifying suicide as a leading cause of mortality in Spain. Registration is now open online at www.darknessintolight.ie or at the Afesol Salud Mental offices in Benalmádena and Estepona.
