A 12-meter high crocheted Christmas tree is currently being set up in José Vázquez square in Cancelada. It has been meticulously crafted with over a thousand crochet applications made by participants of a workshop held at the mayor’s office in Cancelada. Estepona’s City Council has announced that Cancelada will be home to one of Andalusia’s biggest crochet Christmas trees this year. Begoña Ortíz, the deputy mayor of the Extraradio area, revealed that this stunning decoration, adorned with crochet applications, will stand tall at 12 meters. The success of this project is credited to the dedicated work of the workshop participants and the support of other residents in the Cancelada neighborhood. Since September, a group of women has invested countless hours in creating over a thousand crochet pieces that will embellish the tree, showcasing a vibrant and collective effort. The municipal official has emphasized the remarkable artistic and social significance of the initiative, describing it as a testament to the talent, commitment, and solidarity of Cancelada’s residents. The handmade Christmas tree not only brings charm to the neighborhood during the festive season, but also exemplifies the power of community collaboration and enthusiasm. Each handcrafted crochet appliqué combines traditional methods with unique designs that mirror the creative essence of the workshop and the women involved. The tree will be unveiled in José Vázquez square, at the heart of the neighborhood, on December 12 at 18:00, just before the commencement of the Zambomba Flamenco event organized by the City of Estepona. The celebration will feature performances by ‘With sugar and cinnamon’ group and the ‘Solo Flamenco’ dance academy, along with a delightful array of Christmas treats and roasted chestnuts.
