The municipal government is moving forward with a partial plan in Arroyo Judío, stipulating that free housing can only be built alongside VPO units. This marks a significant shift from past policies that did not require developers to allocate land for subsidized housing. Estepona City Council has approved the initial modification of a partial plan for a 655,250 square meter plot in Arroyo Judío, allowing for the construction of 683 free income housing units, accompanied by 518 subsidized housing units. Mayor José María García Urbano emphasized that licenses for free income housing will only be granted if the subsidized housing is completed. The lack of VPO land in Estepona is attributed to previous urban management by the PSOE government. The approval of the Arroyo Judío plan is the first of its kind since 2011, ensuring compliance with current legislation mandating 30% reservation for VPO in future developments. García Urbano highlighted the missed opportunities for VPO development due to past urban management. The new plan aims to address this by requiring simultaneous construction of free housing and VPO, promoting affordable housing initiatives. The plot in Arroyo Judío spans 655,250 square meters and includes provisions for residential development, public amenities, and 30% density reserved for subsidized housing.
