Nearly twenty facilities are undergoing a modernization process through this initiative. The Estepona City Council has announced that the initial stage of the playground renovation and modernization project is nearing completion. The primary objective of this initiative is to enhance the safety and usability of these recreational spaces for children, situated both in the city center and the outskirts. The revitalization efforts are currently focused on 18 parks, with completed upgrades at Plaza de las Nieves, the area in front of the municipal nursery Cancelada, Plaza de la Concordia, the vicinity of the mayor’s office at Isdabe, Blas Infante and Picasso neighborhoods, Avenida Andalucía, and Grandfather’s park on Calle Ortega y Gasset. Moreover, renovations have been carried out at Altos de Guadalobón, Parque del Ángel, Santiago Apostol and Congreso streets, Plaza del Ajedrez, Avenida Guillermo Cabrera, Parque de la Comunicación, and the park near the National Police Station. The playgrounds at Plaza de los Pescadores, Parque Ferial y Deportivo, and Jardín de la Vega are yet to be revamped. The total investment in this municipal initiative amounts to 745,254 euros (inclusive of VAT), with upgrades including the replacement of rubber tile protective surfaces with 4-centimeter thick continuous rubber safety pavements. Dilapidated play elements are being discarded, with salvageable parts being repurposed for other equipment. Additionally, street furniture obstructing the renovation process, such as rubbish bins or benches, have been temporarily relocated within or near the play areas. New play equipment sets or individual elements are being strategically installed to ensure safety compliance as recommended by the manufacturer. Furthermore, perimeter safety enclosures made of colorful 90-centimeter high metal fences are being erected in areas lacking designated safety zones. Essentially, this initiative involves the replacement of worn-out play and safety features with superior, contemporary alternatives tailored to children’s requirements. This phase marks the beginning of a comprehensive plan to revamp all playgrounds across the municipality in the upcoming months.
