A new letter has been sent by the councilor to express the Consistory’s willingness and means to start procedures to defend the coastline due to lack of planning by the central government. Estepona’s mayor, José María García Urbano, has written to the Coastal Demarcation Andalucía Mediterranean, an agency under the Central Government, asking for authorization for the City Council to develop work projects for stabilizing the municipality’s beaches. The projects would be carried out in coordination with the central executive and relevant authorities. The mayor highlights the urgent need for intervention to stabilize the coastline, which has been affected by erosion for years, causing significant damage to infrastructure. The City Council is prepared to draft projects for the most affected areas under the supervision of the Demarcation of Andalusia-Mediterranean Coasts. Talks have been ongoing with Costas regarding the state of certain beaches and the necessity of stabilization projects in line with the Coast Conservation Strategy of Malaga. Despite preparations for projects at Punta Plata, El Saladillo, and Arroyo de Las Cañas, no tenders have been initiated, delaying much-needed interventions. The City Council also proposes taking on the drafting of erosion combat projects for various other beaches. The mayor assures full funding for these projects and seeks approval from Costas, along with guidance on necessary procedures for successful project completion. The frequent storms affecting the province’s coastline pose a recurring threat, leading to erosion and damage that impacts the region’s tourism competitiveness and economy.
