Estepona has expanded its public green spaces to over 800,000 square meters, a 60 percent increase since 2012. The City Hall of Estepona has announced its intention to plant more than 400,000 flower and shrub specimens as part of the spring-summer campaign. The Deputy Mayor of Services and External Control, Blas Ruzafa, stated that the Parks and Gardens team initiated the planting process weeks ago and will continue until August. The objective is to ensure that the city’s green spaces present their best appearance during the peak tourist season. Ruzafa highlighted that all plants come from the municipal nursery, reducing the costs significantly. The plantings are taking place in various locations such as main avenues, promenades, city entrances, and squares, featuring a variety of colorful species like lobelias, begonias, and marigolds. The municipal nursery is experimenting with new plant species to enhance the city’s gardens further. The spring planting aims to create vibrant and eye-catching displays in public areas, with the municipal gardeners praised for their efforts in designing captivating arrangements. Estepona’s commitment to maintaining well-kept public gardens has led to it surpassing 800,000 square meters of green spaces, exceeding the national average per inhabitant. The City Hall’s dedication to expanding green areas and enhancing them with thousands of flowers each season has garnered prestigious awards, including the ‘Andalucía en Flor’ prize on five occasions. Additionally, in 2023, Estepona received the ‘Málaga Viva’ Award for its sustainable and innovative development policies against climate change.
