The request for a meeting with the Directorate General of Roads by the mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, aims to obtain an update on the feasibility studies for a crucial mobility project in the city. Last August 19, Mayor Jose Maria Garcia Urbano called for another meeting with Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility officials to push for a new access point from the A-7 highway. Following a previous meeting with Deputy Director General of Planning and Operation, Rosalia Bravo, and Roads Unit head in Malaga, Elena Fernandez, the mayor seeks to review the progress of the proposal and pending feasibility studies. Ministry officials have committed to potentially initiating a feasibility study before 2024 ends. The councilor emphasizes the importance of this meeting to track advancements in the implementation of the new infrastructure, essential for enhancing mobility in the city. The Municipality remains ready to contribute financially and facilitate project execution, pending government approval. ‘Our governance approach involves interagency collaboration, and we are prepared to use municipal funds for this pending highway access with the central government’s consent,’ stated the mayor. García Urbano trusts that the Ministry will approve the project, addressing the worsening traffic issues on the A-7 due to Estepona’s significant population growth since 2023, as per INE data. Notably, traffic congestion near Avenida Juan Carlos I has escalated, posing risks to road safety. The City Council proposes a new highway access through La Lobilla or Cuesta de Ronda to alleviate the current traffic congestion issues on the insufficient A-7.
