The response from the Ministry under Óscar Puente indicates that the structural rehabilitation of the road surface on the A-7 highway is still in the planning and budget phase. Estepona City Council expresses disappointment at the lack of urgent action by the central government to address the danger posed by numerous potholes and road surface issues on the A-7 highway. This road is crucial for mobility in the Costa del Sol region and jeopardizes the safety of thousands of daily commuters. The Ministry acknowledges the need for a comprehensive approach to address existing road problems and enhance safety, but admits that the project is still in the drafting stage, awaiting planning and budgetary considerations. Despite calls from Estepona’s mayor, José María García Urbano, for immediate repairs and maintenance, the government estimates an 8.7 million euro budget for the rehabilitation project, with no concrete timeline for execution. Only routine maintenance work is deemed feasible until the project is finalized. García Urbano criticizes this approach as inadequate, citing over 300 identified intervention points that pose accident risks due to drivers’ evasive maneuvers. The road section, which sees heavy traffic exceeding 65,000 vehicles daily and 100,000 during peak tourist seasons, has deteriorated further due to recent rains, necessitating urgent structural repairs for user safety.
