The first edition of the Costa del Sol Gran Fondo, which took place on Saturday, has been a resounding success, further establishing the Costa del Sol as a top destination for cycling enthusiasts and showcasing the region’s dedication to sports and environmental sustainability. Estepona’s City Council announced that the event brought together a large number of cyclists who explored the stunning landscapes of southern Spain early in the morning. The day kicked off at 8:00 am with a ceremonial start from Estepona’s city center, led by Mayor José María García Urbano, who emphasized the event’s significance in promoting sports and tourism in the area. The participants cycled through the city streets before embarking on a challenging route through Costa del Sol, Sierra Bermeja, and Genal Valley, culminating in a timed finish at the iconic Alto de Peñas Blancas. The route showcased the diverse terrain, featuring mountainous roads, picturesque white villages, and breathtaking landscapes. The successful execution of the event was made possible by the collaboration and support of various municipalities and local residents, highlighting the sense of community and hospitality that defines the Costa del Sol. The seamless coordination among Casares, Gaucín, Cortes de la Frontera, Jimera de Líbar, Benadalid, Algatocín, Genalguacil, and Estepona ensured the event’s smooth operation. The contributions of Civil Guard Traffic, Civil Protection, Local Police, and numerous volunteers played a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of the event. In terms of sports, the fastest cyclists in the timed section to Peñas Blancas were Pedro García Fernández, Luis Ángel Maté, and Fernando Romera, while María García de la Cruz, Rebeca Bernal, and Rocío García de Veas excelled in the women’s category.
