Throughout 2025, the City Council has arranged a variety of events to honor the 150th anniversary of María Espinosa’s birth. The upcoming event will feature a performance inspired by her speech ‘Influence of feminism in Contemporary Legislation’, presented by students from IES Mar de Alborán. Estepona City Council marks today, May 13, as the day to remember María Espinosa de los Monteros y Díaz de Santiago, a key figure in the fight for women’s civil and political rights. In recognition of her efforts, she was posthumously awarded the ‘March 8 Award’ on International Women’s Day for her role in promoting equality and empowering women. Estepona also honored her by naming her Favorite Daughter back in December 27, 1920. María Espinosa was a woman ahead of her time, engaging in various business ventures and serving as the Spanish director of Yost House, a typewriter company, for over two decades, even counting King Alfonso XIII among her clients. Known for her activism, she founded and led the National Association of Spanish Women (ANME) in 1918, one of Spain’s earliest feminist organizations. To celebrate her legacy, the Centro de Ediciones de la Diputación de Málaga will publish an illustrated album detailing her life and achievements. Additionally, students from IES Mar de Alborán will present a performance based on her lecture ‘Influencia del feminismo en la Legislación Contemporánea’, originally delivered at the Real Academia de Jurisprudencia y Legislación on January 22nd, 1920. Directed by teacher Cristina García Aragón, the performance is scheduled for Friday, June 13, at 12:30 p.m. in the CC Padre Manuel Auditorium. This initiative aims to educate young people about María Espinosa’s legacy and spirit, as part of the Year of Youth activities in Estepona, according to Councillor Julia Simon Ortega.
