To address the growing animal population, particularly dogs and cats, and ensure their well-being without any euthanizing, the Estepona City Council is in the process of implementing a rescue and animal protection service to expand on existing services. The council has recently put out a tender for a contract that includes the collection, sheltering, and care (including veterinary services) of abandoned or stray animals within the municipality. Currently, the council is responsible for removing and caring for animals abandoned by their owners, and has an agreement with a kennel for their care, in line with regulations that prohibit euthanizing. The new contract aims to provide comprehensive care for the increasing animal population, focusing on welfare and prevention of abandonment through awareness campaigns and promoting responsible adoptions. The selected contractor must adhere to animal welfare laws and regulations, and provide services for abandoned animals and management of cat populations. The contract will cover public areas within the municipality, with services available 24/7, including holidays. The annual budget for the contract is 209,791.79 euros, with a duration of 2 years, extendable up to 5 years. The Estepona City Council has long been committed to preventing animal abandonment and euthanizing, with increased efforts following the enforcement of animal welfare laws. They also work closely with animal care organizations and emphasize the importance of adopting pets from shelters.
