In order to enhance visibility and safety in residential and peri-urban areas, as well as to reduce energy consumption and electricity costs, the Estepona City Council has decided to ramp up the Municipal Lighting Plan. The plan includes the installation of solar street lights on seven additional public roads located in the eastern part of the municipality. These roads are Caserío, Tolox, Alquería, Quintana, Masía, Urbanización Cortijo Casareño, and Padre Luis García Cerezo. The project is part of the city’s strategy to improve and modernize public lighting by implementing efficient, sustainable, and low-energy consumption lighting systems utilizing solar technology and LED fixtures. The total budget for this initiative is 83,447 euros (including VAT), with an estimated completion period of 46 days. Around 122 streetlights will be strategically placed at 20-meter intervals. The primary objectives of this endeavor are to enhance visibility and safety in residential and peri-urban areas, while simultaneously reducing energy consumption and electricity expenses. Furthermore, it underscores the city’s dedication to energy efficiency and sustainability. Deputy Mayor for Services and External Control, Blas Ruzafa, highlights that this project is a crucial component of a comprehensive lighting plan that prioritizes sustainable solutions like autonomous solar streetlights. Recently, the City Council also approved the installation of streetlights in other suburban areas, such as Rosalía de Castro, Vereda de los Frailes, Camomila, Menta, Aloe, and the Velerín-Hospiten road. Additionally, efforts are underway to introduce new lighting solutions in specific areas of the coastal corridor. Concurrently, the City Council is actively planning new initiatives for the upcoming years to further expand the network of efficient lighting throughout the municipality.
