The sculptor, known for his wide range of works that are now part of the city’s artistic heritage, is set to be named Adopted Son of Estepona by the City Council. Currently showcasing 180 original marble sculptures at the Mirador del Carmen Cultural Center, Juan Manuel Quiñones has had a long and successful career in Estepona. The international art critics have praised his work as ‘a sensitive archeology of an era, a territory and a memory shared by those who have inhabited or walked through this landscape.’ Born in Vejer de la Frontera, Quiñones has become a cultural reference in Estepona, with his art being exhibited in galleries and art fairs across the United States, Europe, and China. His sculptures, deeply rooted in matter and gesture, have captivated audiences worldwide, showcasing the power of his sculptural language. Estepona and other parts of Andalusia are home to many of his works, reflecting his deep love for the human figure, nature, and local traditions. Among his notable pieces is the sculpture ‘Dracula,’ a massive marble pole that demonstrates his ability to turn the ordinary into extraordinary art. His exhibition ‘Al Origen’ at the Centro Cultural del Carmen has been well-received, with nearly 180 sculptures that evoke memories of summer and childhood. Recognized for his artistry, Quiñones is admired for his affable character and sense of humor, making him a beloved figure within the community. The proposal to grant him the title of Adopted Son of Estepona highlights his contribution to art and his strong connection to the city, positioning him as a cultural ambassador beyond its borders.
