The Municipal Government Urges Immediate Action to Address Electricity Supply Issues in Urban Developments
default

The local government has identified a concerning issue with the current state electricity grid’s ability to provide power to the new residential areas under construction in the town. Mayor José María García Urbano of Estepona has reached out to Minister Sara Aagesen of the Ecological Transition Ministry, urging swift measures to secure an uninterrupted electricity supply for upcoming urban projects. This problem is not unique to Estepona, as similar challenges have been reported in other areas of Malaga province and major cities like Madrid. Real estate associations and electricity industry representatives have been raising alarms about this issue on a national level. Failure to resolve this issue promptly could potentially stall development in Estepona, mirroring the situation in other parts of the country. Delays in electricity provision might also push back the timelines for urban development initiatives, exacerbating the ongoing housing crisis across Spain. The mayor emphasizes that a lack of action from the central government could hinder municipal growth, impacting housing seekers, businesses, and numerous jobs tied to these projects. Public and private initiatives aimed at delivering affordable and subsidized housing are facing significant obstacles due to this electricity supply challenge. The correspondence submitted to the Ministry of Ecological Transition highlights Estepona’s remarkable demographic and economic evolution, with the population growing from 67,000 in 2011 to nearly 80,000 by 2025. This surge has positioned Estepona as a rapidly expanding municipality, attracting new residents drawn to its high quality of life and sustainable urban policies. Consequently, the escalating housing demand underscores the critical need for immediate actions to reinforce the national electricity grid’s capacity for upcoming urban expansions.
