In recent years, Estepona has been known for its high compliance and transparency in handling European grants. However, the central government has rejected the city’s project for 20 million euros in European funds aimed at promoting sustainable urban development and heritage conservation. The City Council is now preparing a legal appeal against this decision, which excluded Estepona from the latest round of funding under the European Regional Development Fund. Despite presenting arguments against the initial rejection of funds, the government stood by its decision, leaving the appeal as the only recourse for Estepona. The city, known for its zero debt and financial stability, had proposed an ambitious project for sustainable development, focusing on green initiatives and modernization. The council’s plan, titled ‘Estepona, garden of the Costa del Sol, green and sustainable city’, sought to revitalize the urban center and enhance the city’s natural, historical, and cultural heritage. Despite Estepona’s proven track record in managing European funds, the government claimed that the project did not meet the necessary criteria. In response, the City Council plans to challenge this decision through legal means to protect the city’s interests. The proposed plan included various initiatives such as creating new green areas, implementing energy-efficient measures in public buildings, and promoting cultural events and sports projects. Estepona has a history of successfully executing European aid programs, with nearly 90% of the previous grant used for urban development projects. The city aims to continue its progress towards sustainable growth and resilience to climate change, emphasizing citizen engagement and quality of life.
