An initiative has been introduced by the City Council of Estepona to establish a family mediation service within the Women’s Department. This service serves as an alternative to legal proceedings, focusing on facilitating dialogue and reaching agreements in family conflicts. Managed by the Social Welfare Delegation and Women’s Area, this free resource aims to provide a secure and professional environment for families to resolve disputes through mutual understanding and responsibility. The Women’s Area councilor, Julia Simón, emphasized the importance of this service in meeting the needs of local families. On the other hand, Social Welfare delegate María Aguilar highlighted the benefits of family mediation in empowering parties to actively participate in conflict resolution, particularly safeguarding the well-being of children. Over the past year, approximately 20 mediation processes have been conducted, each lasting around five sessions, tailored to address specific family dynamics. These mediations primarily addressed issues related to parental conflicts, separation agreements, and restructuring family arrangements. The success of these mediations in reaching agreements underscores the effectiveness of this approach in reducing conflict and promoting communication between parties. Estepona’s mayor also emphasized the preventive aspect of the service, promoting dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution skills. Notably, the service is available in the afternoon to accommodate individuals with work commitments, ensuring accessibility for all citizens. Those interested in utilizing this service must first contact the women’s area for an assessment of the situation. However, it’s important to note that cases involving abuse are not eligible for mediation. The City Council of Estepona is committed to continuing its support for this service, emphasizing its role in providing comprehensive support to families and fostering healthy family relationships.
