The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, has introduced a series of innovative measures aimed at initiating the development of more than 500 subsidized housing units (VPO) in the city. The councilman revealed that the City Council has greenlit two urban planning projects for constructing 110 affordable homes in Camino de Cortes Sur, with construction set to commence shortly. Additionally, preparations are underway to tender two additional plots in Camino de Cortes Norte to build another 199 subsidized housing units. These tenders will feature unique legal aspects allowing for the acquisition of the land at minimal cost, ultimately leading to reduced housing prices for buyers. Moreover, the City Council will set a maximum price for the plots, encouraging lower bids from construction companies and awarding higher scores to those offering affordable housing options to potential buyers. Further measures under the Andalusian regulations will be discussed in the upcoming Plenary session, facilitating the immediate tender of four plots for the construction of 200 public rental housing units. The adherence to the Decree-Law 1/2025 will enable the City Council to unlock approximately 40 smaller plots for subsidized housing, urging interested residents to form cooperatives for self-construction projects. The ultimate goal of these initiatives is to ensure that all residents of Estepona have access to affordable housing options within the next few years. García Urbano emphasized the importance of providing affordable housing to all citizens and acknowledged the challenges faced due to the lack of prior land reservation for subsidized housing. Despite past setbacks, the current administration is committed to implementing these crucial projects to address the housing needs of the community.
