The construction project in Estepona combines engineering and architecture, implementing complex solutions to address the high water table, embank the Monterroso River, and prevent flooding through the construction of a storm tank. Estepona City Council welcomed a group of students from the University of Granada’s Master’s program in Roads, Canals and Ports Engineering to visit the boulevard works. The students, along with their professors, selected this project for their academic visit due to its significant technical and construction challenges. Led by site manager Ignacio Pastor and group manager Federico Vizcaíno from Itercon, the company overseeing the works, the students were guided by the project management team to understand the complexities of the project. Starting with an overview at the Town Hall, the students then observed the works on-site. Rocío Sánchez, a project team member, highlighted the project’s technical aspects, emphasizing the integration of engineering and architecture to revitalize a central urban area. Challenges arose due to water presence, with the high water table near the sea and the Monterroso river embankment requiring intricate solutions such as drainage wells and a storm tank to prevent flooding. The students found the project to be unique and engaging for their studies, engaging with project leaders to gain insights. This visit is part of their academic curriculum, which includes exploring various engineering infrastructures like AVE works, dams, the Estepona boulevard, and the Algeciras port.
