Estepona Honors the Consular Corps of Malaga with a Landmark Meeting on International Cooperation

A display on Terraza Street showcases the nearly 400 years of history of the consular institution. Estepona’s City Council dedicates a public area in the city to honor the Consular Corps of Malaga. Estepona’s City Council and the Consular Corps of Malaga came together for a significant meeting in the city, gathering representatives from close to thirty countries with consulates in the province. This event, coinciding with the 63rd anniversary of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and Spain’s 40 years of EU membership, has set a milestone in Andalusia by hosting the largest number of diplomatic representatives in such an event. Mayor José María García Urbano emphasized the city’s pride in hosting the Consular Corps of Malaga, positioning Estepona as a key player in international cooperation. He highlighted Estepona’s historical role as a meeting point for diverse cultures and civilizations, underscoring the importance of fostering diversity while looking towards the future. The meeting also addressed global concerns, underscoring the essential role of consulates as bridges for understanding in today’s complex world. The Dean of the Consular Corps of Malaga, José Luis Ramos, stressed the vital function of consulates as spaces for meeting, exchange, and coexistence in the current international landscape. The event also featured an exhibition celebrating 400 years of consular history in Malaga, located on Terraza Street, showcasing the unique roles and functions of each consulate in the province since 1641. Additionally, Estepona’s City Council designated a public space in the city in recognition of the consuls’ contributions to their communities and international relations.
