The approval has been given by the City Council to auction two parcels in Camino de Cortes for the construction of an additional 199 subsidized housing units, with a focus on offering the lowest possible prices to potential buyers. A budget adjustment of 27 million euros has been agreed upon during the plenary session, derived from the surplus of 2025, in order to continue enhancing city infrastructure and services. The Corporation’s Plenary has also granted a building permit for a total of 117 VPO homes (split into two developments of 84 and 33 houses) in the Camino de Cortes area. Mayor José María García Urbano of Estepona stated that significant progress has been made in the municipal plan to provide affordable housing for citizens facing financial difficulties, citing the successful relocation of over 100 families to the Juan Benítez development over the past four years. Additionally, the municipal government has greenlit the proposition to tender two plots for the construction of 199 subsidized housing units under general and special regimes in the Camino de Cortes Norte zone, with an emphasis on awarding contracts based on the most competitive final prices for homebuyers. Furthermore, the City Council approved the compatibility of use for 36 municipal plots in the previous February Plenary Session, allowing for the potential development of subsidized housing. This decision was made possible by Estepona’s adherence to the Decree-Law 1/2025, enforced by the Junta de Andalucía, to encourage VPO construction. The city urban development plan indicates that up to 738 homes could be constructed on the available land across Estepona. The council has also made six municipal plots accessible to the central government for the development of 109 subsidized housing units, strategically located in areas such as Casas del Padrón, Llanos de la Boladilla, and Camino de Cortes. These actions align with the recent announcement by the Spanish Government to mobilize funds totaling 23,000 million euros, both public and private, to stimulate housing supply and support the construction of 15,000 units annually through the ‘Spain Grows’ initiative. Furthermore, ongoing urban development initiatives are underway to facilitate the construction of 300 VPOs in Camino de Monterroso and an additional 800 in the Guadalobón and Arroyo Vaquero regions. On the economic front, the plenary session has endorsed a budget adjustment of 27 million euros from the surplus of 2025 to further enhance city infrastructure and services. Deputy Mayor of the Economic sector, Ana Vilaseca, attributed this financial opportunity to effective management and positive economic outcomes in Estepona, emphasizing that the allocated funds will address city requirements, enhance citizen welfare, and contribute to job creation and economic prosperity within the municipality. Specifically, 7 million euros will be dedicated to an extensive road resurfacing project, park and garden renovations, the completion of the coastal promenade, street lighting and road improvements, as well as an expansion of the cleaning services. Plans are also in place for beach enhancements, educational facility upgrades, and a comprehensive revitalization of the Fuerzas Armadas neighborhood.
