An environmental education activity was carried out by the Estepona City Council today with students from CEIP Federico García Lorca, focusing on installing nest boxes for bats and small nocturnal raptors like the scops owl in various areas of the municipality. Working in collaboration with the naturalist group ‘Grunsber’, approximately 150 nest boxes will be set up in urban and peri-urban locations in Estepona. Students learned about the important role of bats and birds of prey in urban ecosystems and observed the placement of the nest boxes. Bats are essential for controlling insect populations, with a single bat consuming up to 150 mosquitoes daily. All bat species are protected by national and European laws due to their ecological significance. The European scops owl, a vulnerable species, also aids in insect control and contributes to biodiversity. This initiative underscores the City Council’s dedication to biodiversity conservation and environmental education, fostering harmonious coexistence between wildlife and the urban landscape.
