Estepona City Council has announced that Casa de Las Tejerinas, situated in Plaza de las Flores, will be the venue for a fresh exhibition by sculptor Toby Govan from July 30 to September 30. The opening event is scheduled for next Thursday, July 30, at 8:30 p.m., featuring a live performance by local flamenco singer Rocío Bazán. The exhibition will be accessible to visitors throughout August and September, from Tuesday to Saturday between 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 p.m., and on Sundays from 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., with no entrance fee. Toby Govan, an artist based in Estepona with Scottish roots, presents his new sculpture collection titled ‘Apogeo: The Emergence of Being,’ showcasing around thirty large-scale pieces and twenty smaller works that will be rotated monthly. Known for encouraging the audience to ‘feel the stones,’ Govan aims to convey the strength and vitality encapsulated within his creations. His sculptures, whether massive or small, are meant to be touched, offering a tactile experience to the viewers. A sculptor since a young age, Toby Govan (born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1967) has been residing in Andalusia for most of his life. Trained at Granada’s School of Arts and Crafts and in photography in Madrid, he honed his skills under the guidance of his father, the sculptor Douglas Govan, learning the art of direct carving and the language of stones. Inspired by his mother, the watercolorist Ann Govan, he inherited an eye for balance and order in composition. Specializing in direct carving of various natural stones like marble, serpentine, peridotite, quartzite, and lapis lazuli, Govan creates sculptures with organic and abstract forms exploring themes of unity, protection, nature, and embrace. His artworks not only visually engage the viewer but also invite tactile interaction, providing a holistic sensory experience. Toby Govan’s sculptures can be found in private collections and public spaces across Spain, the UK, France, Germany, and the USA, including monumental pieces permanently installed in Estepona. He is in a close relationship with poet Lorena Jiménez Martín, intertwining poetry and sculpture in their creative endeavors. Govan has previously showcased his works at Casa de las Tejerinas in exhibitions such as ‘Las Milhojas de la Vida’ (2025), ‘Eternas Sensaciones’ (2024), ‘Naturaleza Viva’ (2024), and ‘Tocando Sensaciones Preciosas’ (2023). His participation in group exhibitions includes various editions of ‘Caprichos’ by the Málaga Provincial Council and ‘Hitos del Rodenal’ in Guadalajara, a tribute exhibition to the victims of a tragic 2005 forest fire in Alto Tajo. Additionally, he has created six monumental sculptures integrated into Estepona’s urban landscape, contributing to the city’s artistic heritage. These sculptures include ‘En tus brazos’ (In Your Arms) at Plaza Paco de Lucía, ‘La Elefanta Requetebién’ (The Very Cool Elephant) at Plaza Rocío Bazán, ‘El Ascenso’ (The Ascent) at the Municipal Athletics Stadium, ‘El Abrazo a la Cultura’ (Embrace of Culture) at the Padre Manuel Cultural Center, ‘Dragón al Sol’ (Dragon in the Sun) at El Calvario Park, and ‘Floreciendo’ (Blooming) in the gardens of Orquidario Botanical Park.
