A new initiative is underway to install over 170 smart cameras in various locations around the city, particularly on the outskirts. This move aims to leverage advanced technologies for optimizing traffic flow and swiftly addressing traffic congestion or accidents. The Estepona City Council is preparing to invite bids for the expansion of the current network of smart cameras, with the goal of bolstering traffic control and enhancing urban mobility. The upcoming installation will see more than 170 devices added to the existing 240 cameras that were set up three years ago. These new traffic control cameras will be strategically positioned at 82 different sites, primarily in the city’s outskirts, but also within the city center. Ana Velasco, the Deputy Mayor for Development, Infrastructure, and Tourism (FIT), highlighted that the introduction of the smart camera system in 2023 positioned the City Council as a trailblazer in the province for its innovative technology adoption. Following positive outcomes in traffic management, the decision to expand the system was made to extend its reach across various areas within the municipality. The imminent upgrade will introduce advanced traffic control devices with enhanced capacity and performance, enabling the integration of new technologies to enhance traffic flow and facilitate immediate responses to incidents such as traffic jams and accidents. The operations of the system are coordinated from the Control Center at the Estepona Local Police Headquarters, which offers essential support to other law enforcement agencies as required. This intelligent system enables real-time connectivity, data display, and storage on a central server situated at a City Hall facility, with access provided from the Estepona Local Police Headquarters. Furthermore, measures are in place to utilize the entire traffic video surveillance network for monitoring and regulating traffic speed and volume, including the deployment of speed monitoring checkpoints. The objective is to influence driver behavior positively, ultimately enhancing overall mobility, road safety, and reducing carbon emissions.
