On the evening of Saint John’s Day, Tuesday, June 23, the Estepona City Council will host the annual ‘San Juan Night Festival’ at La Rada Beach, next to the post office. Festivities will kick off at 9:00 p.m. with a variety of performances along the boardwalk, including the 46th edition of the ‘Burning of San Juan’s Mustache’ Contest near the monument to La Peseta. The contest will judge bonfires based on theme, artistic quality, originality, and more, with cash prizes for the winners. Following this, the renowned group ‘La Década Prodigiosa’ will take the stage at 10:00 p.m. Residents and associations will also showcase their ‘juás’—critique-filled figures intended for the bonfire. The burning of the ‘juás’ at midnight marks the start of San Juan Night, where locals gather to dip their feet in the sea for good luck and to ward off bad omens. The City Council may choose to preserve exceptional ‘Quemas’ for future events.
