The 3rd edition of the Chess Tournament in memory of the long-serving instructor and director of the Municipal Chess School, Miguel Abril, will take place on Thursday, July 2, from 8:00 p.m. onwards at the chess boards along the Paseo Marítimo. This Swiss-system tournament will consist of five 10-minute rounds and is open to 200 players of all levels, with a focus on students from the Municipal Chess School and local clubs. Registration is free and can be completed via WhatsApp, phone at 619063600, or email at escueladeajedrez@estepona.es. Juan Miguel Abril Rodríguez, who dedicated over 40 years to teaching chess, was honored with the Torre Almenara de la Cultura Award in February 2023 for his outstanding contribution to the sport. His passing on October 5, 2023, at the age of 67, deeply saddened the community, prompting the City Council to rename a public space in his honor as ‘Juan Miguel Abril Rodríguez.’
