Maria Aguilar, the Councilor for Social Welfare and Education, revealed that the Consistory dealt with 130 children under 16 years old for truancy issues last year. Plans are underway to organize workshops on social skills, academic support, and career guidance to prevent absenteeism and promote school attendance for the upcoming 2025/2026 school year. Aguilar led the initial meeting to establish the Truancy Technical Team in Estepona, attended by school directors, education officials, and various stakeholders. The meeting addressed truancy cases and reviewed the Truancy Prevention Program, a collaborative effort between Estepona City Council and the Territorial Delegation of Educational Development and Vocational Training of Malaga. Municipal technicians conducted 1,297 actions last year, including phone calls, interviews, and personalized interventions for truant students and families. The program targets children up to 16 years old, activating intervention measures after five unexcused absences to prevent further truancy. Aguilar emphasized the importance of teamwork between professionals and entities involved, stressing the need for joint efforts to ensure all children receive education. The City Council is developing a new truancy prevention program for the upcoming school year, focusing on workshops to promote attendance, enhance social skills, address technology addiction, provide academic support, and offer career guidance. Local Police will monitor school surroundings to identify truancy cases, with plans to implement additional protocols as needed.
