By installing over a hundred new devices, the City Council aims to leverage new technologies to optimize traffic flow and promptly address traffic congestion or accidents. Estepona City Council is set to bolster traffic monitoring in the city by expanding the current network of smart cameras, with the goal of enhancing urban mobility. The council will initiate the bidding process for the procurement and installation of 144 new devices that will be seamlessly integrated into Estepona’s traffic visualization, monitoring, and control system. In 2023, the council introduced a cutting-edge smart camera system for urban traffic control, setting a precedent in the province with its innovative technology. Initially, 110 devices were deployed across the city, later complemented by an additional 73 traffic control cameras in different residential areas through collaborative agreements. This system has delivered numerous advantages in traffic control for Estepona’s council and residents, prompting the expansion to achieve broader coverage in various municipal areas, as noted by Deputy Mayor for Safety, Ana Velasco. The upcoming system upgrade will mark a significant advancement by incorporating new surveillance devices with enhanced capacity and features, facilitating the implementation of advanced technologies to optimize traffic flow and enable swift responses to traffic congestion or accidents. Managed from the Control Center at the Local Police Headquarters, the system is also accessible to other law enforcement agencies as needed. Real-time interconnection, viewing, recording, and storage of various data, images, and videos are facilitated on a central server at a City Hall facility, accessible from the Estepona Local Police Headquarters. Furthermore, measures are in place for leveraging the entire traffic video surveillance network to monitor and reduce traffic speed and density, including the installation of a speed control point. The objective is to influence driver behavior positively, thereby enhancing overall mobility, road safety, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The installation of all components of the traffic monitoring, display, and control system will strictly adhere to the relevant security measures outlined in the ENS (National Security Scheme), ensuring secure information transmission across the network and compliance with existing legislation on security and personal data protection. Apart from procurement and installation, the contract will encompass the maintenance of all current devices. The initial bid budget for the contract totals 970,410.78 euros, inclusive of VAT.
