Donated by the renowned sculptor, five sculptures by Santiago de Santiago have been unveiled outside the new City Hall. Estepona’s City Council continues its mission to bring culture to the public by placing art pieces on the streets, turning the city into a vast open-air museum. These new sculptures, a gift to the City Council, now adorn the surroundings of the City Hall. One of them, made from red Sepúlveda stone and titled ‘Celina,’ stands out with its strong presence and character. Alongside it, four other sculptures made of volcanic stone display unique characteristics, where the sturdiness of the material contrasts with the elegance of the forms. The mayor expressed his pride in having the works of this renowned sculptor in the city, recognizing Santiago de Santiago as a key artist of the second half of the 20th century. With these additions, the city now boasts a total of thirty sculptures by the artist in various busy areas. The mayor highlighted Santiago de Santiago’s commitment to Estepona, dating back to 2015 when he first expressed his desire to gradually relocate his entire personal collection to the city. Santiago de Santiago, who passed away in 2023, studied sculpture in France, Italy, and Japan, creating busts of notable figures from politics and culture, including presidents from different countries and members of the Spanish Royal Family. The councilman emphasized that this project is part of Estepona City Council’s ongoing efforts to make culture more accessible to the local community, mentioning other cultural initiatives such as the Artistic Murals Route, the Poetry Route, and the installation of sculptures in public spaces.
