A traditional fishing boat will soon be on public display at one of the roundabouts along Puerta del Mar Avenue in Estepona. The new vessel will replace the current boat, which is in poor condition and needs to be replaced. Estepona City Council aims to highlight the city’s maritime heritage by showcasing a representative example of the traditional purse seine boats used along the Mediterranean coast. This initiative, led by councilmember Daniel García, underscores the importance of preserving Estepona’s seafaring identity and cultural heritage. The new boat will not only contribute to urban beautification but also serve as a sculptural and museum-like element along the major thoroughfare. The vessel must meet specific criteria, including being between 11 and 13 meters in length, made of wood and/or fiberglass, and structurally sound for static display. Interested bidders have until August 24 to submit their proposals for the 68,970 euro contract. The acquisition of this boat is part of Estepona’s ongoing efforts to honor its historical connection to the sea and fishing traditions, as seen in initiatives like the Museum of the Sea. This museum, inaugurated last November, showcases the Miguel López Mateo Collection and celebrates the rich maritime culture of the Mediterranean.
