A campaign to promote glass recycling is being launched by the City Council and Ecovidrio in Estepona to encourage participation in the hospitality industry and general public. Estepona is participating in the ‘Green Flags Movement’ by Ecovidrio, recognizing coastal municipalities and the hospitality sector for their commitment to glass container recycling and the circular economy. The municipality has exceeded the national average for glass recycling, collecting 1,570.62 metric tons of glass containers last year, with an average of 20.40 kilograms per resident. Estepona has 340 green recycling bins, making recycling more accessible, and a program dedicated to the hospitality industry, which collected 125.14 metric tons of glass through door-to-door service. The City Council aims to further improve recycling rates during the summer season, focusing on the restaurant sector, as nearly half of single-use glass containers come from bars, restaurants, and beach bars during this period. The municipality will collaborate with Ecovidrio to educate food service establishments on proper glass container sorting and promote sustainable practices. Awareness-raising initiatives will also target residents and visitors to emphasize the importance of glass recycling. Participation in the Green Flags Movement will help establish Estepona as a leading municipality in sustainability by increasing selective glass collection, engaging the hospitality sector, and promoting awareness among the public. The City Council encourages all restaurants and residents to join the initiative to maintain Estepona’s position as a sustainable city model.
