Experience ‘The Sea Held in Hands’ at the Municipal Library, housed in the Padre Manuel Cultural Center, from March 30 to April 12, open for free visits from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Estepona City Council announces the upcoming showcase of ‘The Sea Held in Hands’ at the Municipal Library, featuring documented images of the Barbate traps captured through the lens of José Benítez Contreras from Estepona. In the early nineties, José Benítez Contreras delved into the ancient ritual of the Barbate traps, documenting the annual tuna lifting process from April to June. The photographs, initially published in May 2000 in the bilingual magazine LOOKOUT, are now on display at the María Zambrano Hall of the Municipal Library, showcasing this tradition intertwined with local fishing history. Divided into four sections, the exhibition explores the almadraba fishing system’s evolution over three thousand years, the men behind the effort, the pivotal moments of the fishing process, and historical postcards of Estepona depicting artisanal fishing life. Accompanied by a curated bibliographic collection from the Municipal Library, ‘The Sea Held in Hands’ provides a glimpse into the almadraba tradition and its significance in the Mediterranean region.
