The modernization of the Museo de Mar in Estepona, funded by the European Maritime, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Fund and the Regional Government of Andalusia, is near completion. The museum will showcase new exhibition spaces, audiovisual content, and a recreation of a seagrass meadow. Estepona City Council is enhancing the exhibition that celebrates the city’s deep-rooted historical connection with the sea. The renovation project at the Museo del Mar, situated within the city’s bullring premises, includes adding new elements to improve the presentation of content related to Estepona’s maritime tradition. Display cases will exhibit part of the López Mateo collection, renowned for its navigation and fishing instruments. Large panels will provide information on various sea-related topics, like fishing, marine conservation, shipbuilding, and seafaring traditions. The museum will also feature new audiovisual resources focusing on the Alboran Sea, shipbuilding, and the tradition of the Virgin of Carmen. A highlight of the project is an immersive room recreating a Posidonia seagrass meadow to raise awareness about marine conservation. The initiative, with an investment of 65,347.87 euros, is co-funded by the European Maritime, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Fund and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development of the Regional Government of Andalusia. Through this endeavor, the City Council aims to promote Estepona’s historical and cultural heritage through the preservation of its seafaring identity.
