Progress is being made on the stormwater and sewer systems as well. The excavation phase of the upcoming velodrome construction project in Estepona is nearly complete. Situated next to the Monterroso Creek and Camino de las Mesas, the velodrome will offer cycling facilities, an 11-a-side soccer field, and the city’s first rugby amenities. This initial phase also involves finishing the stormwater and sewer systems essential for the sports complex. The project, commencing last June, includes a peri-urban park spanning over 20,000 square meters, featuring a banked track for cyclists and an advanced artificial turf field for rugby and soccer matches. The oval velodrome will accommodate 1,000 spectators with tiered seating, along with restrooms, locker rooms, a gym, offices, and storage areas within the main service building. The sports facility is positioned in the northwest part of the municipality, close to Monterroso Creek and Camino de las Mesas. Basic utilities such as water, sewer, and electricity will be connected during the first construction phase. The playing field dimensions adhere to the Regulations on Sports Facilities and Spaces (NIDE) for soccer and rugby, while the cycling track design complies with UCI Cycling Regulations. The Parque Estepona joint venture was awarded the project for 3,652,569.85 euros, proposing a shortened construction timeline of 9 months. Furthermore, the City Council is planning to integrate the Monterroso River into the city, connecting it to the Fairgrounds and Sports Park, and developing affordable housing in the area.
