The II Memorial Juan Miguel Abril Rodríguez, in memory of the Estepona Chess Grand Master, will take place on Tuesday, July 8, from 8:00 p.m. until midnight, at the chess boards along the Paseo Marítimo. Estepona City Council has announced a Chess Tournament in honor of the late Chess Grandmaster, Miguel Abril, who was the monitor and director of the Municipal Chess School. The tournament will follow a Swiss system with five rounds of 10 minutes each, open to 200 players, primarily students from the Municipal Chess School and local clubs. Registration is free and can be completed via e-mail at escueladeajedrez@estepona.es or through WhatsApp at 619063600. Juan Miguel Abril Rodríguez dedicated over 40 years to his passion for chess, leading the Municipal Chess School since 1985 and producing numerous champions. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Torre Almenara de la Cultura Award in February 2023. His sudden passing in October 2023, just after retiring, deeply saddened the community. To honor his memory and dedication, the Town Council named a public space ‘Juan Miguel Abril Rodríguez’, with a tribute held last year at the Paseo Marítimo.
