Conducted in April and May by Pesca y Turismo Azul, the program aims to enhance the quality of life of participants through cognitive stimulation using virtual reality. The next phase is scheduled to commence in September. Estepona City Council revealed that more than 120 individuals engaged in the ‘Sensory Blue Ocean – Navigating between Sensations and Memories’ initiative. This unique program merges real-life maritime experiences with immersive technology to enhance the well-being of seniors and vulnerable populations. La Mar Consultores-Turismo Marinero spearheaded the project over two months to foster emotional well-being, cognitive stimulation, and social inclusion, while celebrating Estepona’s maritime-fishing heritage as a crucial aspect of local identity. The program, divided into six days for small groups, provided personalized attention tailored to the participants’ needs. Each three-hour session combined educational segments, hands-on experiences, and sensory stimulation. Notably, immersive virtual reality technology played a significant role, enabling participants to immerse themselves in complete sensory experiences emulating the marine environment, triggering emotional recollections and strengthening their connection with sea-related memories. The first phase of the initiative achieved a remarkable milestone by addressing the digital gap that initially impacted over 97 percent of participants. The program also featured guided tours of the fishing port and fish market, enlightening participants on traditional sea occupations, fish auction procedures, and the local fishing industry’s history. Practical workshops on organic aquaculture and seafood craftsmanship complemented these activities. ‘Sensory Blue Ocean’ champions environmental sustainability and gender equality, integrating educational modules on sustainable fishing practices, marine ecosystem conservation, and coastal biodiversity awareness. It sheds light on women’s contributions to the fishing sector, historically undervalued, by incorporating a gender perspective throughout. The project is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, focusing on health, innovation, sustainable communities, and marine life protection. It received a 15,000 euro investment, fully financed through public assistance under GALPA Costa del Sol (FEMPA 2021-2027).
