Objects that are found are stored securely for a period of two years. If the rightful owners do not come forward within this timeframe, the finder has the right to claim them. The Estepona City Council has reported that the Municipal Lost and Found Office successfully returns approximately 70% of the discovered items to their owners. Situated within the Local Police premises, this office is responsible for recording and safeguarding objects found by citizens on public streets. The process is straightforward – when an individual discovers an item and delivers it to the Local Police Headquarters, a detailed record is created in a specialized lost items application. This record includes all relevant information about the discovery and the finder’s personal details, after which the object is held in custody for the legally mandated two-year period. Should the object go unclaimed during this time, the finder is entitled to assume ownership. The office deals with a wide range of finds, including cash, wallets, identification documents, electric scooters, mobile phones, and various other items. Efforts are made to locate the rightful owners once items are received, with successful cases even involving returns to individuals in foreign countries such as England and France. Any individual who has misplaced an item can visit the Lost and Found Office at the Local Police Headquarters to check for its presence. To reclaim a lost item, proof of identity is required.
