A new project has been launched by the mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, involving the establishment of a peri-urban park spanning over 20,000 square meters. This initiative aims to provide space for more than 300 affordable housing units. The groundbreaking ceremony for the future velodrome took place today, with the venue set to include facilities for cycling, 11-a-side soccer, and the city’s first rugby amenities. The velodrome will be situated near the Monterroso Creek and Camino de las Mesas. It will feature a banked track for cyclists and an artificial turf field suitable for rugby and soccer matches. The oval-shaped stadium will have stands with an initial capacity of 1,000 spectators, along with essential amenities like restrooms, locker rooms, and offices. Construction began in early June on a plot of land allocated for sports facilities in the northwest of the municipality. The project is expected to be completed within 9 months and has been awarded to the Parque Estepona Joint Venture for a total cost of 3,652,569.85 euros. The new facility is a response to the long-standing demand from both professional and amateur athletes in the region. The mayor highlighted the positive impact of this development on the quality of life for citizens. Additionally, the City Council is working on integrating the Monterroso River into the urban area, connecting it to the Fairgrounds and Sports Park, as well as the town center. Plans are also underway for the construction of around 300 publicly subsidized housing units in the Monterroso area.
