The local government in Estepona is bringing biodiversity closer to schoolchildren by organizing scientific bird banding days at the Parque de las Mesas. The Environment Delegation, in partnership with the Strait Ornithological Group, has initiated this program specifically designed for 5th and 6th graders. The goal is to instill knowledge and respect for biodiversity from a young age. Accredited specialists from the Ornithological Group of the Strait will lead the technical aspects of the project, including bird capture, banding, and data collection. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about the fauna in their immediate environment, nurturing a sense of responsibility towards conservation efforts. By identifying and valuing the species in their daily surroundings, the hope is to cultivate a stronger connection to the natural world. These educational days will take place at the Parque de Las Mesas, providing easy access for students and an ideal setting for the program. Estepona’s strategic location along a migratory route between Europe and Africa makes it a prime spot for observing and studying various species during the autumn migration. The activity will span a month, with each class session lasting approximately an hour and a half. The program includes an introductory talk followed by hands-on experiences where students witness bird capture and scientific banding. Health assessments, weight measurements, and biometric data collection will be conducted by experts before placing a metal ring on each bird’s leg and releasing it back into the wild. The data collected will contribute to international scientific databases, enhancing our understanding of the observed species. Additionally, this valuable information will be shared with collaborating institutions and the Estepona City Council to enrich local biodiversity knowledge. Through this initiative, the City Council underscores its dedication to environmental education and conservation, nurturing a sense of responsibility among youth to coexist harmoniously with nature and safeguard the ecosystem.
