From June 20 onwards, increased surveillance will be carried out by the Local Police at mountain entrances and in Los Pedregales Park to enforce regulations against burning and the use of fire during the high-risk fire season. The Estepona City Council has initiated a special forest fire surveillance and prevention campaign, scheduled to run until October 15 in accordance with regional regulations defining the peak period for forest fire danger. During the period from June 1 to October 15, controlled burns and the use of fire in forested areas and their vicinity are strictly prohibited, along with any activities that might pose a fire hazard. These measures aim to reduce the risk of fires during a critical period characterized by elevated temperatures, low humidity, and the presence of dry vegetation. To ensure adherence to these preventive measures and enhance protection of the municipality’s natural surroundings, the Local Police will launch a dedicated enforcement and awareness initiative starting on June 20 targeting individuals accessing forested areas within Estepona’s jurisdiction. Various checkpoints will be established daily at mountain entrances, particularly along the Estepona-Jubrique highway, where officers will verify identification and vehicle details while educating visitors on the applicable restrictions and bans during this heightened fire risk phase. The checkpoints will operate during morning and afternoon shifts until fire hazard conditions permit their deactivation. Checkpoint locations will be designated by the Service Headquarters, primarily focusing on the Estepona-Jubrique highway near kilometer marker 4.5, and other strategic points for natural environment surveillance and protection. Daily reports documenting identified individuals and, if necessary, vehicle license plate numbers will be compiled by officers on duty. Additionally, intensified monitoring will be conducted by the Local Police during weekends in Los Pedregales Park and its environs to prevent misuse of barbecue facilities in this nature reserve. Despite the closure of these facilities for safety reasons, instances of seal removal and unauthorized fires have been reported, a practice strictly forbidden and posing a considerable threat to environmental preservation and public safety. Residents are urged by the City Council to prioritize prevention as the most effective measure against wildfires, emphasizing the importance of adhering to current restrictions and contributing to the safeguarding of Estepona’s invaluable natural heritage.
