This innovative initiative marks a departure from the previous government’s privatization model for parking, benefiting citizens with the opportunity to park for just one euro per day. The City Council has begun the process of reclaiming the concession granted to PSOE in 2005 for a 75-year period. Estepona’s municipal network of public parking lots offering 1 euro daily rates is set to expand by integrating private parking lots, starting with the acquisition of 174 spaces at La Viña parking lot on Melilla street. This move will significantly reduce the current hourly parking rate of 2.40 euros to just 1 euro for daytime parking, with a 3 euro fee for 24-hour parking compared to the current 17 euros. The technical and legal procedures for reclaiming the infrastructure have already commenced, following the concessionaire company’s willingness to proceed with the rescue. The City Council’s shift towards public parking lots with affordable rates replaces the previous administration’s privatization approach, offering 1 euro daytime rates and 2 euros for night parking. As Estepona continues to grow, the municipality remains committed to providing new parking spaces by exploring the rescue of existing concessions to increase public parking availability. The Council has initiated discussions with concessionary companies to acquire private parking lots on Avenida España and Melilla Street, with plans to proceed only with interested parties. Objective valuations are underway to determine the acquisition cost, which the Council can cover using the surplus from the 2024 budget. The municipal parking plan, including four public parking lots with 1 euro daily rates, not only provides over 2,000 parking spaces but also creates job opportunities for individuals with disabilities, with 37 contracts already formalized through a partnership with the Aprona Association. Two new parking lots are under construction to further expand the network, including one near Iglesia del Carmen with 322 parking spaces across three underground levels, and another at Parque Central boulevard with 300 spaces. Additionally, plans are in place for a new parking area in La Lobilla, with the project’s design phase nearing completion.
