With the goal of enhancing the existing support, a new contract will be put up for bidding, with an annual allocation of 250,000 euros. The local government has a partnership with a kennel to ensure no euthanasia, as mandated by the national legislation passed in 2023. The Estepona Town Hall is in the process of finalizing the necessary steps to open up the bidding process for the animal rescue and protection services in order to strengthen the current coverage. Responsible for handling and caring for abandoned animals due to the negligence of their owners, the Estepona City Council oversees the removal and upkeep of these animals. Currently, the kennel, in collaboration with the local government, takes care of approximately 56 dogs that have been rescued from the streets or homes where they were neglected or abused. This partnership, in compliance with the existing laws that prohibit euthanasia, provides a safe haven for these animals. The upcoming bidding process aims to extend the services to accommodate the growing animal population, especially dogs and cats, ensuring their well-being and prohibiting euthanasia, while also promoting initiatives to raise awareness against abandonment and encourage responsible adoptions. To support this initiative, an initial budget of 250,000 euros per year has been earmarked for the service. Over the years, the Estepona City Council has been actively working towards preventing animal abandonment and euthanasia in the city, particularly after the enactment of Law 7/2023, which focuses on the protection of animal rights and welfare. Additionally, the local government has been collaborating annually with organizations dedicated to animal welfare in the area.
