During the session, a decision was made to allocate a credit supplement of 6 million euros to subsidize the Real Estate Tax (IBI) for residents. The City Council of Estepona has given the green light to the necessary economic measures to carry out the largest IBI reduction the city has ever seen, resulting in a significant savings of over six million euros for families. This reduction, averaging 20%, is made possible by the financial stability achieved after clearing a debt of over 300 million euros and having a surplus of 45 million euros from the 2024 budget. Mayor José María García Urbano highlighted the historic nature of this tax cut and the government’s dedication to supporting families through responsible financial management. The approval of a credit supplement in today’s plenary session will help provide the subsidy, with part of the funds coming from last year’s savings and the rest from 1.4 million euros previously allocated to debt repayment. Nearly 38,000 receipts will benefit from this subsidy, totaling 6.1 million euros. Despite opposition from PSOE and VOX, the IBI has now decreased by 50% since 2011 due to ongoing measures. The City Council plans to explore further tax reductions once the financial burden of past mismanagement is fully addressed, including a 3% reduction in the garbage rate for residents who utilize the city’s clean point for specific waste items. Residents seeking this reduction must apply to the Provincial Collection Board in the first quarter of 2026 with relevant documentation. Additionally, tax benefits are already in place for vulnerable residents, long-term unemployed individuals, and retirees in Estepona.
