The Estepona Municipal Assembly has initiated the bidding process for the reinforcement, stabilization, and refurbishment works at La Hermandad Park in order to provide a permanent solution to the landslide issues caused by the heavy rainfall last winter. The planned project involves the construction of three four-meter-high breakwater walls with concrete foundations to enhance the terrain’s stability by reducing the slope between the existing retaining walls. Additionally, non-water-dependent trees will be planted in the intermediate area between the walls, and a pedestrian pathway will be established to connect with Calle Latvia, along with internal roads. The internal road network and the main square will undergo repairs, as well as the lakes in the southern section. Due to the unique clayey composition of the park’s terrain, the excessive rainfall in October and November of the previous year triggered a landslide that affected urban structures, infrastructure, and pedestrian pathways, necessitating restricted access for safety purposes. The implementation of this crucial project to enhance park safety and sustainability is open for bidding with a starting price of 433,083.22 euros (including VAT) and an initial completion timeframe of six months. Technical assessments have indicated that the oversaturation of clays due to recent heavy rains has caused ‘lubrication and excessive weight, leading to slope deterioration and sliding into the basin’. These issues will be addressed through the planned intervention.
