A recent assessment by experts has revealed that the landslides in La Hermandad Park were triggered by heavy rainfall last year, prompting the decision to construct breakwater walls to prevent future incidents. The Estepona City Council has approved a project to reinforce and stabilize the park, addressing the ongoing landslide issues caused by the previous autumn and winter rains. The plan involves building four-meter-high breakwater walls with solid foundations to reduce the steepness of the terrain between the existing retaining walls. In the spaces between the walls, trees that are drought-resistant will be planted, and a pedestrian path will be established to connect to Calle Latvia, along with internal pathways. Additionally, maintenance will be carried out on internal roads and the main square, as well as the lakes in the southern section of the park. The allocated budget for this vital initiative to enhance the safety and sustainability of the park is set at 378,731 euros, with an estimated completion period of six months. The unusual composition of the park’s soil, containing clay materials, combined with the heavy rains in October and November, resulted in a landslide that affected various urban structures, infrastructure, and pathways, necessitating restricted access for safety reasons. Consequently, the City Council has included this project in the assistance program for municipalities impacted by natural disasters or emergencies, specifically addressing the aftermath of the DANA storm in Andalusia. The necessary steps to secure funding for the project are currently underway with the regional government. Detailed technical assessments have highlighted the role of excessive clay moisture due to recent rainfall in destabilizing the slope, leading to lubrication and increased pressure, resulting in slippage within the basin. These issues will be rectified through the proposed construction work.
