Annually, the local government undertakes a clearing campaign in urban areas to remove plant debris, reeds, and accumulated garbage. Estepona’s City Council has initiated the clearing operation in over fifty riverbeds and river crossings within the city, aiming to prevent floods and fires. These interventions ensure the smooth drainage of rivers and streams by eliminating obstacles and preventing blockages that could lead to flooding during heavy rainfall. Additionally, the clearing of stream beds helps in reducing the risk of forest fires, safeguarding the residents and natural heritage of the municipality. The work has started in Arroyo Pantoja and will continue in various areas, including Arroyo el Taraje, Arroyo Judío, Hornacino de Levante, and Río Guadalobón, among others. The City Council is focusing on both upstream and downstream sections of rivers and stream crossings, emphasizing the importance of maintaining these areas to prevent potential disasters. All activities have been authorized by the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment, following the nesting times of protected species. Once the clearing is completed, a cleaning company will remove any remaining solid waste from the designated areas.
