The City Council is arranging a workshop focused on preventing domestic accidents among senior citizens as part of the initiative ‘Active Seniors: Healthy Living’. The aim of this training session is to promote independence and safety within the home by encouraging preventive habits that can decrease the likelihood of accidents. The Estepona City Council has announced that the Elderly department, in collaboration with the Local Police, will conduct the workshop titled ‘Your house, your home. Prevention of domestic accidents’. This workshop is designed for older residents of the municipality and is part of the ‘Active Seniors: Healthy Living’ program. The primary goal of the workshop is to enhance autonomy and safety at home, with instruction provided by Estepona Local Police officers. The objective is to assist seniors in recognizing common domestic risks and adopting preventive measures to minimize accidents, particularly falls, which are a frequent occurrence among this demographic. Councilman Daniel García Ramos emphasized the importance of prevention, stating that ‘preventing accidents at home is crucial for elderly individuals’ well-being’. He highlighted the value of workshops like this in helping individuals identify everyday risks and implement simple measures to enhance security, confidence, and independence at home. The workshop, lasting three hours, will offer practical information on prevalent domestic risks, such as poor lighting, obstacles, inappropriate footwear, dizziness, distractions, and side effects of medications. Interactive activities will allow participants to share experiences and identify hazards in their own living spaces. The workshop will also cover risk assessment by room, focusing on areas like the bathroom, kitchen, corridors, stairs, bedroom, living room, and terrace. Prevention strategies will be proposed, including the use of support bars, anti-slip mats, proper lighting, space organization, and hazard signage. Participants will also learn safe habits and mobility exercises to enhance balance and strength, along with recommendations for incorporating secure routines into daily life. They will receive guidance on using assistive devices like smoke detectors, SOS bracelets, canes, and walkers. At the conclusion of the workshop, attendees will create an individualized home improvement plan, pinpointing immediate changes and ‘safe spots’ within their homes. Informational brochures with checklists and ongoing prevention recommendations will be distributed. The City Council of Estepona continues to prioritize active and healthy aging initiatives through programs like ‘Active Seniors: Healthy Living’, aiming to boost elderly participation, personal autonomy, and overall quality of life via educational and preventive measures. Interested individuals must register in advance for these activities. For further details, contact the Geriatric Office at 168 Terraza St., call 952792602, or email geriatrico@estepona.es.
