Running from March to December, the ‘Harmonious Melodies’ program takes place in senior residences and the Alzheimer’s Day Center under the guidance of professional vocalist, Ana Fargas. Councilman Daniel García Ramos, responsible for Elderly Affairs, along with Social Services, Elderly, and Social Integration director Lorenzo Guerra, and project monitor Ana Fargas, a professional vocalist, have introduced a new iteration of the ‘Harmonious Melodies’ initiative, a groundbreaking music therapy project in the city aimed at seniors. This municipal project targets residents of senior homes and the Alzheimer’s Day Center, helping them stimulate memory by recalling and performing songs that hold significance from their past. The initiative also aids in emotional expression, encourages socialization, and promotes communal experiences, as stated by the municipal representative. The mayor emphasized that this program is primarily a gesture of care and appreciation towards the elderly, offering not just a service but also reinstating emotions, feelings, and the chance for them to be the protagonists of their own lives. Daniel García also expressed satisfaction with the program’s positive outcomes in each edition, noting improved mood, reduced negative behaviors, and increased social engagement among participants. Family members and professionals have highlighted how music triggers memories, fosters social interaction, and diminishes isolation, contributing to a more vibrant and healthy aging process. The program’s methodology, explained by Lorenzo Guerra, combines active participation, including singing, clapping, rhythmic movements, and playing simple instruments, with a listening and reminiscing component focused on songs from their youth and personal history. The selection of songs is curated by the project monitor, professional singer Ana Fargas, featuring popular tunes from musical genres of particular interest to the elderly, such as flamenco, sevillanas, copla, pasodobles, and boleros. Ana Fargas emphasized that music serves as a therapeutic tool to engage memory, attention, emotional expression, and communication, especially for individuals with cognitive impairments or Alzheimer’s disease. ‘We aim to work on physical and cognitive aspects, particularly attention and memory, in addition to emotions by evoking memories through songs. This approach encourages socialization, empathy, and improved relationships among participants, enhancing their overall mood,’ she explained. Councilman Daniel García reiterated the government’s commitment to the elderly, promoting innovative activities like ‘Harmonious Melodies’ to enhance autonomy and emotional well-being through the therapeutic influence of music.
